This is one of the most famous private houses of Guanajuato where one of the best-known legends of the city comes from: the legend of the Carcamanes. Everything starts with the arrival in Guanajuato of Nicolás and Arturo Karlkaman ―traders from Europe― at the turn of the nineteenth century. The “Carcamanes” (Poor Immigrants), as they were popularly known, established themselves in a peculiar and huge three-story building next to the San José small square.
In the morning of June 2, 1803 the corpses of the two brothers were found. They were stabbed. The weirdest thing is that they were not murdered to be robbed and there were no clues of any alleged killer; a few hours later a third corpse solved the mystery. A Young woman “equally beautiful as frivolous she was” as the legend goes, was found dead in the same house, with a dagger stabbed in her heart.
All that horror derived from a tragic love triangle that was solved in the worst way, which could be reason for three ghosts going wandering through the house as soon as the sun goes down on the horizon, lamenting their disgrace. In exchange, the visitors can chose to enjoy their time in any of the different coffee shops next to the attractive “Casa de los Carcamanes”.
One of the most famous private houses in Guanajuato and home to one of the city’s best-known legends: the legend of the Carcamanes. The story starts with the arrival in Guanajuato of two traders from Europe, Nicolás and Arturo Karlkaman. The “Carcamanes” – or “poor immigrants” – as they became known, set up business in a vast and peculiar three-story building facing onto the small San José square.
Then, one morning of June 2, 1803, the murdered bodies of the two brothers were found. They had been stabbed to death. The detail that aroused the most curiosity is that the motive for their murder was not robbery, and their killer had not left a single clue. However, only a few hours later, a third corpse solved the mystery: A young woman who was, according to the legend “as beautiful as she was frivolous” was found dead in the very same house, a dagger piercing her heart.
All this horror was unleashed by a tragic love triangle that resolved itself in the worst possible way, and so since that time, every evening when the sun sinks behind the horizon, three ghosts wander the house, bewailing their terrible fate. However, visitors can choose to enjoy themselves at any of the various coffee shops that line the street around the beautiful, but ill-fated “Casa de los Carcamanes”
